Reader FAQ

What is an e-book reader?
An e-book reader is a piece of system software that allows the e-books to be read on your computer. For example, Adobe has the Acrobat reader, and Microsoft has its own imaginatively named Microsoft Reader.

Which e-book reader is Authority Books using?
As of spring of '05, Authority Books is using a third-party company's reader, the eBookPro.com reader v. 5.54. We hope to be able to introduce our own e-book reader soon.

Why aren't you using Acrobat?
Adobe has not yet come out with a digital-rights management product that meets the needs of publishing companies. Their beta product has been recalled (spring '05).

How do I install my e-book reader?
Simply download the .exe file for Windows HERE, and then either click on Open, or click on Save and then double-click the resulting .exe file. This will install the reader into your computer.

Do I need to install a reader every time I buy a book?
Just like other reader programs, you need to install the reader only once, before you can view your first book. Forever after that, the reader should be on your computer, and you should be able to view your various different e-books directly.

What is the book license?
Books are licensed for viewing on a single computer, plus an additional lap-top. The book is licensed to you to view, but remains the property of Authority Books. You may not resell or redistribute the book or copies of the book in any form.

Can I print the book out?
You are allowed to print yourself a copy for personal use.

Are the e-books copyrighted?
All of Authority Books's e-books are copyrighted under international law, and may not be copied, reprinted nor resold, not even outside of the United States. The characters are also trademarked, and may not be re-used. If you would like to license our characters for manufacturing, please contact our licensing department (see the legal page). Certain pamphlets, trailers, and movies are intended for advertising purposes and may be freely redistributed; they are marked as such.

Does Authority Books own eBookPro?
eBookPro is an independent third-party provider not owned by Authority Books.

Can I get my eBook reader from eBookPro.com?
Authority Books is currently using the exact same eBookPro reader version 5.54 that is provided as the latest official version on the eBookPro.com website. They also have a demo version which is earlier, and is imcompatible with Authority Books's books. To avoid confusion, simply make sure to download your reader from our website.

Do I need a password in order to open my e-book every time?
The first time you open your e-book, the reader will authenticate you with a pair of installation pass-codes called the "username" and "password". These two pass-codes are sent to you when you buy the book. These belong to you, the e-book, and your computer. They install the e-book into your computer's reader, and allow you to be able to read your e-book on your computer thereafter. You do not have to retype those pass-codes into your e-book after you have installed your e-book once.

Do I always need to be connected to the Internet in order to be able to read an e-book?
The eBookPro reader requires Internet verification about every other or every third read. If you are going to be on a plane with your laptop, for instance, you can open the e-book on that computer, make sure it syncs up and verifies, and then be able to read your e-book once or twice even when you haven't connected to the Internet. The setting Options->Override Internet Connection Check should be useful. See the eBookPro.com website for further details and instructions.

What filename extension does eBookPro have?
eBookPro format e-books use the .ebk extension. After you have installed your reader, you should be able to double-click on your e-book, and it will open to be read by itself.

I double-click on my e-book, but absolutely nothing happens--no launch.
It sounds like your e-book reader did not get installed properly. Did you run the reader's .exe file after you downloaded it? Does your system have the little blue moon and "e" symbol on the e-book's icon, to show that your computer knows that it belongs to the eBookPro reader, or is it blank/generic? Try downloading and running the eBookPro .exe reader installation program again.

I double-click on my e-book, but the popup says "bad version".
This indicates the e-book was made with a later version than your reader. You might be trying to use the demo reader by mistake, or perhaps we went through a version change. In any case, it's probably best to re-download the latest version of the reader from our website and re-install it.

I double-click on my e-book, but the popup says "certificate expired".
This can indicate a number of things.
1) The reader cannot get to the Internet to verify your e-book. Make sure your computer is connected to the Internet, and your firewall is enabled to allow eBookPro to connect through.
2) The eBookPro verification server may be down for repairs. This seems to happen at least once a year. Try waiting until the following workday.
3) You have installed your ebook pass-code on more than two computers.
4) Your e-book has been pirated and has been disabled.
